Tansu Knives Petty (Utility Knife) 150mm Satin wood handle

If you are into the handmade knife scene, you may have already of heard of Tansu Knives and Mert’s work.
He has won many knife awards such as ” best new maker” and “best kitchen knife” as well as featured in several knife magazines.
Also being from the Hunter Valley region he is a local.

Mert’s work focuses on what makes a knife great.
(steel type, heat treatment and edge geometry)

In my opinion, people often get too caught up in steel type and not
enough emphasis is put on heat treatment and edge geometry.

Mert seems to excel at all of these things.

About the knife:
The very attractive handle is made from Satin wood.
Satin Wood is An Australian hard wood.
Handle shape is a custom round oval with flat sides.
The blade has a little Kuro (black) and Nashiji (rough) finish with the bevels polished by hand.
This knife will develop a patina with use.
Once a patina has developed the knife will not only have a unique look but a natural protective coating.
“A patina is a natural protective layer on carbon steels that protects the blade from further oxidation”

“These are carbon, Initially they require bit more wiping but once the patina sets, it’s easy to take care of them”.
-Mert

Leigh’s 2 cents: 52100 is one of my favorite steels when heat treated correctly.
This is a exceptional knife made to last a very long time/lifetime if cared for correctly.
Non- stainless knives are some of my favorites.
They are almost like living tools that change over time, and tell a story.

My Advice will always be the same: Don’t buy 10 cheap knives. Buy a few great knives.

*This knife is not a toy. It is extremely sharp. Please use care when using this knife to avoid injury.
*This knife is subject to corrosion, so be sure to follow knife care instructions to help avoid surface rust, also may rust easily if mistreated.
Be careful not to scratch off the black outer. Once it has gone you can’t get it back!

About 52100 steel:

52100 is a Carbon Alloy Steel originally developed in 1905 as a bearing steel for high pressure applications (which is why it is commonly referred to as ball bearing steel) but has since become legendary as a blade steel.

Typical alloy composition:
52100 steel composition
1,1% of Carbon: It improves hardness and wear/corrosion resistance, but a high amount of it decreases strength.
1,5% of Chromium: For tensile strength and Edge retention, and enhances corrosion resistance and wear resistance.
0,30% Copper: Prevent surface oxidization.
0,3% Nickel: Improves toughness.
0,45% of Manganese: Increases hardness and brittleness.
0,30% Silicon: Improves Strength.
0,30% of Phosphorus: Increases strength.
